Slovakia is worried that the United Kingdom's exit from the European Union, or Brexit, might have adverse consequences for Slovaks who live in the United Kingdom, member of the European Parliament Ivan Stefanec told Sputnik.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — On June 23, the United Kingdom held a referendum in which voters chose to leave the European Union.

"We have concerns about our people who are working in Great Britain because there is a threat that they will not have the same position as British citizens," Stefanec stated on Thursday. "So, it’s our objective to protect them and to keep the same authority as for other citizens in the Great Britain."

Stefanec noted that so far Brexit has not had an impact on Slovakia, but that the European Union should avoid raising duties on British products.

"It’s our interest to keep single market all together, and not to apply duties on the British products and services. The same, I hope, will be the objective from the side of Great Britain," he explained. "Therefore, the negotiations will be very important, and I hope that we can minimize the damages."

The parliament member went on to say that the EU and UK should continue cooperating on a range of issues.

"Even if Great Britain will go out of the European Union, they will stay as the part of the European trade, and we will have still very important trade, political, and also defense objectives together."
