UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) — The UN Security Council will vote at 3 p.m. EDT (19:00 GMT) on Saturday on a draft resolution from France that seeks to establish a ceasefire in the Syrian city of Aleppo, Russia’s mission to the United Nations confirmed.

“The vote will take place tomorrow at 3 p.m.,” the mission stated on Friday.

The Security Council met, at Russia’s request, on Friday to discuss conditions in Syria.

Afterward, Council President Vitaly Churkin urged support for a proposal, presented Thursday, from UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura to escort militants from the group Jabhat Fatah al Sham — formerly al-Nusra Front — out of Aleppo.

Syrian President Bashar Assad has said he would support amnesty for rebel fighters who agree to relinquish their weapons and leave the city.

In contrast to de Mistura’s plan, Churkin said the French proposal was hastily put together and seemed designed to cause a Russian veto in the Security Council.
