De Mistura Asks Moscow, Damascus About Further Steps in Eastern Aleppo
UN (Sputnik) – The plan of UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura on withdrawal of the Nusra Front jihadist group militants from Aleppo may be carried out solely in case the bombardments of the Syrian city are stopped, French Ambassador to the United Nations Francois Delattre said Friday.

The UN Security Council agreed to hold a meeting to discuss the situation in Syrian Aleppo, namely, de Mistura’s proposal, on Friday on the initiative of Russia.

"Those are interesting proposals, which require careful examination. But they may be implemented solely given the end of the bombardments in Aleppo," Delattre said before the meeting of the Security Council.

On Thursday, de Mistura proposed to personally escort Jabhat Fatah al Sham (formerly known as the Nusra Front, banned in Russia) fighters out of Aleppo, adding that there were some 900 militants of the group in the war-torn city. According to de Mistura, the eastern part of Aleppo could be destroyed in two weeks if the military activities in the city continue.

Russia Concerned About Attempts to Skirt UNSC Resolutions on Syria
Commenting on the proposal of de Mistura, UK Ambassador to the United Nations Matthew Rycroft said that he supported fighting terrorism in Aleppo and other parts of Syria, though it should be conducted without air strikes against densely populated civilian areas.

Aleppo has been a battlefield between government forces, jihadists, and numerous opposition groups. Fighting in the city has escalated over the past few weeks, with the Syrian army and local militia forces having managed to encircle large groups of militants in the eastern districts of the city.
