WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Before debating Trump on September 26, Clinton had only a one-point lead in the same poll. The increase is mainly due to her growing support among independent voters, who are not registered in either party, the poll found.

"In a…survey of likely voters taken Sept. 30 through Oct. 2, the Democratic nominee leads her Republican rival by 6 points, 42 percent to 36 percent," text accompanying the Politico/Morning Consult poll stated.

The second of three Clinton-Trump debates is scheduled for this Sunday, October 9, in St. Louis, Missouri.

The US presidential election is set for November 8.
