The United Kingdom will provide 1 million pounds ($1.3 million) for demining of northern Syrian cities, liberated from Daesh terrorist group, the UK Foreign Office said in a statement.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — UK Foreign Minister Boris Johnson made this announcement during his visit to Turkey, where the Syrian conflict was on top of the talks agenda.

"Building on UK efforts to help victims of the conflict in Syria, the Foreign Secretary pledged £1 million for de-mining projects to allow essential humanitarian and stabilisation efforts to commence in northern Syrian towns recently liberated from Daesh," the statement issued Tuesday said.

Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011, with government forces loyal to President Bashar Assad fighting a number of opposition factions and extremist groups, such as IS and Jabhat Fatah al Sham (also known as Nusra Front, or Jabhat al-Nusra), both of which are banned in Russia and a range of other countries.
