US Special Envoy for Climate Change Jonathan Pershing is traveling to Paris for a three-day meeting this week to prepare for a major environmental summit in Morocco in November, the US Department of State announced in a press release on Tuesday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — In December 2015, the international community agreed to limit global average temperatures to less than 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial levels by reducing emissions. The agreement will be open for signature until April 21, 2017, and will enter into force when ratified by at least 55 of the 196 signatory states.

"The meetings will convene OECD [Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development] climate and environment Ministers and will focus on key policy challenges to moving forward on climate change priorities for the year," the release stated.

The sessions will also focus on implementation of the Paris Agreement ahead of the upcoming 22nd Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, according to the release.

The convention is to be held in the Moroccan city of Marrakech November 7-18, the first climate summit since the successful adoption of the Paris agreement in December 2015, the release noted.
