At the first presidential debate held in New York, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump clashed over the issue of the nuclear nonproliferation.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Nuclear weapons are the greatest threat currently in the world, Republican nominee Donald Trump said in the first US presidential debate.

"The single greatest problem the world has is nuclear armament, nuclear weapons," Trump stated on Monday evening.

Hillary Clinton responded with a claim that Trump’s recent remarks about using nuclear weapons are contrary to longstanding US policy against those weapons.

"He has said repeatedly that he didn’t care if other nations got nuclear weapons… It has been the policy of the United States [among both] Democrats and Republicans to do everything we could to reduce the proliferation of nuclear weapons," Clinton said.
