US Senate to Consider Overriding Obama’s 9/11 Act Veto on Wednesday

The US Senate will decide on Wednesday whether to override President Barack Obama’s veto of a controversial bill that would allow families of the 9/11 victims to sue Saudi Arabia, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said in a congressional session on Wednesday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Obama vetoed the bill on Friday, stressing that the legislation violates the principle of sovereign immunity.

"I ask unanimous consent that… on Wednesday, September 28, the Senate proceed to the veto message on S. 2040 that there be two hours of debate [and] the Senate vote on passage of the bill, the objections of the president to the contrary notwithstanding," McConnell stated.

The Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act (JASTA) would allow US citizens to sue foreign nations that provide material support for a terrorist act on US soil or affecting US persons.

The Obama administration has also expressed concern that JASTA could lead to lawsuits against the United States or US officials for groups that received Washington’s assistance.
