The naming competition was aimed at boosting morale, but shocked many upon its publication, as entries included such suggestions as Bombie McBombface, Chuck Norris and Another Waste of Taxpayer Money.

The jet has been officially named the B-21 Raider, in honor of the World War II Doolittle Raiders, it was announced Monday at the annual Air Force Air, Space & Cyber Conference in National Harbor, Maryland.

The Doolittle Raiders, a crew of 80 servicemen and 15 B-25 attack aircraft, bombed Tokyo in 1942, in response to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

The Air Force Global Strike Command launched a survey in March, asking serving members, their relatives and retirees to submit possible names for the proposed aircraft. The contest entries were not made public until Thursday, when the War Is Boring military-commentary website published the list, which it accessed under the Freedom of Information Act.

The list reflected a full spectrum of feeling about the proposed aircraft, including 16 versions of Boomy McBoomface, suggesting just how much confidence in the plane service members have. The jet was also offered the names Wobbly Goblin, 9/11 Cover-up and ISIS, as well as Fundsucker and Budget Overrun.

The $80 billion stealth bomber is expected to be introduced to service in the mid-2020s.
