The EU welcomes the New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants adopted on the sidelines of the 71th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA).

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The European Union welcomes the New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants adopted on the sidelines of the 71th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) and hopes that it would help to solve the global crisis, EU Ambassador to Russia Vygaudas Usackas said on Friday.

"In the EU, we are sure that no country that receives migrants or that migrants come from can solve this problem unilaterally. That is why we are glad the heads of states that gathered for the 71st UNGA agreed to come up with the agreement on solving migration crisis by 2018 and raised the status of the IOM," Usackas said, speaking at the conference on migration crisis in Moscow.

The New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants was adopted during Monday's Summit for Refugees and Migrants that took place on the sidelines of the 71st UNGA session. In the declaration, UN member states committed to begin by 2018 the negotiations on holding an international conference that should adopt new migration and refugee agreements as well as addressing the issues of human trafficking and border control.
