More than 150 flights were canceled in Rome’s international airport Fiumicino on Thursday as employees of the Italian flag carrier Alitalia went on strike, media reported.

ROME (Sputnik) — A total of three professional unions of pilots and flight attendants ANPAC, ANPAV and USB are protesting against the extension of working hours, the Corriere della Sera newspaper reported.

The strike is scheduled for 24 hours, with two time gap periods, the newspaper said.

The summer period in Italy usually sees an increase in the number of protests by major trade unions. In July, Alitalia staff held another strike over contractual issues. The Alitalia representative earlier said that ANPAC's decision to go on 24-hour strike was pure madness, resulting in company's losses of about 500,000 euros (about $558,000) per day.
