UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) — Strengthening information-sharing among governments to fight terrorism is a top priority for the United Nations, the world body’s counterterrorism chief Jehangir Khan told Sputnik.

"Information-sharing has to be strengthened, both between neighbouring countries, regionally and globally, and that is very much also the focus of our efforts here as part of international cooperation," Khan said on Wednesday after a meeting of the UN-sponsored Global Counterterrorism Forum.

The event was held in conjunction with the UN General Assembly in New York.

The sharing of "actionable" information among countries "is the bedrock" of international cooperation, said Khan, a Moroccan citizen who directs both the UN Counter-Terrorism Centre and the UN Counter-Terrorism Implementation Task Force.

The United Nations’ counterterrorism strategy, which all member states have adopted, codifies a common pledge to exchange timely, accurate information in trying to prevent or combat extremism, Khan noted.

UN agencies further that goal by helping member states develop their security capabilities, he added.
