WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Defense contractor Lockheed Martin has won a $147 million DARPA contract to research the hypersonic Mach 5 Tactical Boost Glide aircraft project, the US Department of Defense announced.

"The Lockheed Martin Corporation [of] Palmdale, California, has been awarded a $147.3 million… prototype agreement for a research project under the Tactical Boost Glide (TBG) program," the announcement stated on Monday.

The Tactical Boost Glide program is a joint DARPA-US Air Force effort to develop technologies to enable future air-launched, tactical-range hypersonic boost glide systems that operate at hypersonic speeds — five times the speed of sound and beyond, DARPA said on its website.

Such systems offer the potential for future US offensive strike operations from longer ranges with shorter response times and enhanced effectiveness, DARPA explained.
