WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — US voters who are considering support for a minor-party candidate in this year’s presidential election should instead back Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, Senator Bernie Sanders said in a television interview on Friday.

"Let us elect Hillary Clinton as president, and the day after, let us mobilize millions of people around a progressive agenda," Sanders told MSNBC.

In a Quinnipiac University poll released this week, Clinton was five points ahead of Republican rival Donald Trump in a two-candidate matchup. However, when the survey's options included Libertarian Party candidate Gary Johnson and the Green Party's Jill Stein, Clinton's lead against Trump narrowed to just two points.

"Before you cast a protest vote … think about what the country looks like and whether you're comfortable with four years of a Trump presidency," Sanders cautioned.

Sanders, an independent who represents the state of Vermont in the US Senate, sought the Democratic Party nomination but lost to Clinton and now endorses her candidacy. He is scheduled to campaign for his former rival in Ohio this weekend.
