Obama to Ask Nations to ‘Step Up’ Pressure on North Korea at UN

President Barack Obama will press other countries to amplify their efforts to bring North Korea into compliance with the global nuclear nonproliferation regime at the UN Security Council next week, White House officials told reporters.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — White House Deputy National Security Advisor Ben Rhodes noted that Obama will address North Korea’s September nuclear test "in the broader nonproliferation context" during his address to the UN General Assembly on Tuesday.

"Speaking about US approaches [to North Korea's nuclear program] entails also… getting other countries to step up and not simply sit back and expect the United States to do it singlehandedly," US representative to the United Nations Samantha Powers said in a Friday conference call.

In March, the international community responded to North Korea’s fourth nuclear test by imposing tough sanctions on the country. The sanctions were supported unanimously by all members of the UN Security Council, including China, which maintains the economic and diplomatic ties with North Korea.
