The US Department of Justice has proposed a $14 billion payment to settle potential civil claims involving residential mortgage-backed securities, Deutsche Bank said in a statement.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — According to the statement, Deutsche Bank will not settle the potential claims for "anywhere near the number cited," and that the Justice Department has asked the Bank to make a counter-proposal.

"Deutsche Bank confirms that it has commenced negotiations with the Department of Justice in the United States (DOJ) with a view to seeking to settle civil claims that the DOJ may consider in connection with the bank’s issuance and underwriting of residential mortgage-backed securities," the statement noted on Thursday evening. "The bank confirms market speculation of an opening position by the DOJ of USD 14 billion."
