Moscow hopes common sense prevails and Kiev will comply with international law in allowing Russian legislative elections to be held at its diplomatic establishments in Ukraine, Deputy Foreign Minister Grigory Karasin said Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Elections to Russia’s lower house of parliament, the State Duma, are scheduled for this Sunday, September 18. Polling stations have been prepared for opening in the capital of Ukraine, Kiev, as well as consulates in Lviv, Kharkiv and Odesa.

"Work is underway. We hope that international law will be observed – the relevant provisions of the Vienna Conventions – that our colleagues from the OSCE special monitoring mission will also watch over how these provisions are respected. It is part of their mandate, the rest depends on the common sense of the Ukrainian authorities," Karasin told RIA Novosti.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko instructed Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin late last week to inform Russia about the "impossibility of conducting Russian elections on Ukrainian territory."
