WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — US Vice President Joe Biden and members of Congress met with Myanmar’s longtime opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi to discuss the Southeast Asian nation’s moves toward democracy, the White House announced in a read out.

"The Vice President and members welcomed the recent progress in Burma's [Myanmar] democratic transition," the read out stated on Wednesday.

The meeting took place earlier in the day at the US Naval Observatory, the read out stated.

The participants also discussed President Barack Obama’s decision to terminate the national emergency and end Executive Order-based sanctions against Myanmar and they shared views on areas for future bilateral cooperation, the White House noted.

Suu Kyi said she supported Obama’s decision to lift sanctions and welcomed the efforts of the United States to strengthen civilian rule in Myanmar, the read out added.
