MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Turkey must abide to the democratic freedoms like the right to a fair trial in the wake of the military coup attempt, EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said Tuesday.
"Turkey must recommit strongly to those principles and values that are at the core of that democracy that the Turkish people protected and defended on the night of 15th of July: the rule of law, freedoms, pluralism, including also the rights that are at the core of any democracy, including the guarantee that everybody has the right to a fair trial," Mogherini said at the European Parliament.
The July 15 coup was quickly suppressed by the government forces the following day. Over 240 people were killed and more than 2,000 were wounded during the operation.
Turkish authorities accuse Fethullah Gulen, a Turkish Islamic Preacher who lives in a self-imposed exile in the United States, of having orchestrated the coup.
