UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura said that there is a significant drop in violence after the ceasefire coming into force.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Violence in Syria dropped significantly following the ceasefire coming into force on Monday, UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura said Tuesday.

On September 9, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State John Kerry announced a new peace plan to address the conflict in Syria that called for a ceasefire to come into force on Monday.

"By early morning every report we have been seeing indicates a significant drop in violence," de Mistura told journalists.

He added that the United Nations has prepared a humanitarian convoy and ready to send it with "simple notification to the government about what is the content in the tracks and then no checking on UN tracks that have been sealed."
