A force of 15,000 policemen were deployed early Tuesday to the southern Indian city of Bengaluru to stop rioting that erupted after a row over river water, city police said.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Bengaluru is a major technology hub and the capital of the Karnataka state, which has been locked in a long-standing dispute over the use of the Cauvery River with the neighboring state of Tamil Nadu.

"15,000 thousand police men and officers have been deployed all over the city," Bengaluru police office tweeted, saying the situation was "peaceful."

On Monday, the nation’s Supreme Court ordered Karnataka to release 12,000 cubic feet of water to Tamil Nadu until September 20, prompting violent protests in Bengaluru.
