On Sunday, the US paid tribute to the tragedy that shook the entire world. The names of the victims killed in the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001 were once again recited by their family members at the memorial complex built on the site of the tragedy in New York City.
During the ceremony there were six minutes of silence: four of them took place at the exact time when four planes hijacked by al-Qaeda terrorists crashed into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a Pennsylvania field. The other two were supposed to mark the time when both towers of the Trade Center collapsed.
"This weekend, we honor their [9/11 victims] memory once more. We stand with the survivors who still bear the scars of that day. We thank the first responders who risked everything to save others. And we salute a generation of Americans — our men and women in uniform, diplomats and our intelligence, homeland security and law enforcement professionals — who serve, and have given their lives, to help keep us safe," US President Barack Obama earlier said in his weekly address.
Today, many people worldwide expressed their condolences to the families of the victims and their beloved ones. Social network users made numerous posts on their Twitter and Facebook accounts commemorating those who were killed during the attack.
