ROME (Sputnik) — The incident occurred early Friday during a local festival with many people on the streets. About 1:30 a.m. [23:30 GMT Thursday], the 43-year old veterinarian Costantino Gattu, who was driving Fiat Panda, lost control of his vehicle and crashed into the crowd on the main street.
When Gattu stepped out of the car, someone from the crowd stabbed him four times.
The driver was delivered to hospital, where he was placed under surveillance of the law enforcement officials, investigating the circumstances of the accident.
Gattu could reportedly have been intoxicated while driving.
