EU Wants Closest Possible Relations With UK After Brexit

President of the European Council Donald Tusk said that the goal of the European Union is to establish closest possible EU-UK relations.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The European Union wants to establish the closest possible ties with the United Kingdom after it leaves the bloc, President of the European Council Donald Tusk said Thursday.

"Our goal to establish closest possible EU-UK relations. Ball in UK court to start negotiations. In everybody's best interest to start asap," Tusk posted in his official Twitter account following his meeting with UK Prime Minister Theresa May.

​On June 23, the United Kingdom held a referendum to determine whether or not the country should leave the European Union. According to the final results, 51.9 percent of voters, or 17.4 million people, decided to support Brexit, while about 16.1 million opposed it.

Britain has not yet triggered Article 50 of the of the Lisbon Treaty to start the process of leaving the European Union.
