The work to eradicate mosquitos carrying the Zika virus from neighborhoods in the US state of Florida will resume after Hurricane Hermine passes through, Governor Rick Scott said at a press briefing on Thursday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Scott noted that the hurricane is expected to hit the Gulf Coast of Florida around 2:00 a.m. (6:00 a.m. GMT) local time on Friday.

Guilherme Trivellato, from the British biotec company Oxitec, releases genetically modified Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, a vector for transmitting the Zika virus, in Piracicaba, Brazil, as part of an effort to kill the local Aedes population. (File) - Sputnik International

"As soon as this happens, we’ll do very aggressive mosquito abatement around the state, but also you need to get rid of all the standing water around your house… at your business… anyplace you see," Scott stated.

The storm is expected to bring nearly two dozen inches of rain and a storm surge of up to 12 feet in some areas, Scott noted.
