According to a report by CBS San Francisco, the social network will resort to using a word filter as a means of reducing abuse, including insulting language, trolling and racial and sexist attacks.

"We suck at dealing with abuse and trolls on the platform and we've sucked at it for years," said Dick Costolo, the company's former CEO, last year.

Critics suggest that unless Twitter's word filter is highly user-customizable, it will prove, as have previous attempts by other platforms, to be poor protection against the verbal insults of inventive online trolls.
