Opponents of Maldives’ President Abdulla Yameen are plotting to oust him in the coming weeks, media reported Thursday, citing sources.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The BBC broadcaster quoted Yameen’s spokesperson as saying that the president’s office was aware of the planned overthrow and said it would be "clear breach of international norms."

Government sources reportedly described the planned coup as a "formal attempt at 'legally' overthrowing the government."

The news come amid rallies against Yameen’s rule, as the public is protesting against the crackdown on political activists in the country and introduction of controversial laws imposing heavy restrictions.

Yameen has been serving as the president of Maldives since 2013, being the second democratically elected leader in the country’s history. During his rule, his predecessor Mohamed Nasheed, a human rights and environmental activist, has fled to the United Kingdom facing a long jail sentence at home.
