The risk of conflict escalation in the eastern Ukrainian region of Donbass remains very high, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko warned on Wednesday, voicing hope that reconciliation measures would be "reanimated."

KIEV (Sputnik) – Speaking alongside Polish President Andrzej Duda in Kiev, Poroshenko expressed hope that his latest talks with German and French leaders would "reanimate" the Normandy format.

"The threat of escalation of the conflict is, unfortunately, very high," Poroshenko told reporters.

Kiev launched a military operation in the Donbas in April 2014 after local residents of Donetsk and Lugansk regions refused to recognize new Ukrainian authorities which came to power after the February 2014coup.
