MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The watchdog chair urged the government to put in place a comprehensive and coherent race strategy that would tackle the most pressing race-related issues in the society in order to avoid growing divisions and increasing tensions.
"The combination of the post-Brexit rise in hate crime and deep race inequality in Britain is very worrying and must be tackled urgently," David Isaac, the chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC), was quoted as saying by the watchdog its report.
He called for redoubling efforts to address race inequality still "entrenched" in the British society.
"If you are Black or an ethnic minority in modern Britain, it can often still feel like you’re living in a different world, never mind being part of a one nation society," Isaac said.
Employment opportunities are also not equal for all people in Britain, as black workers with degrees are paid 23.1 percent less than white workers, the watchdog said, adding that the likelihood of unemployment among ethnic minorities with degrees is 2.5 times higher than among white people with degrees.
Ethnic minorities in the United Kingdom are also said to be underrepresented in positions of power.
