Russia is ready to support the UN special envoy’s proposal to establish as soon as next week a two-day humanitarian pause in the Syrian city of Aleppo to supply the local population with food and medicine, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said Thursday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – He added that the specific dates and times of the pause would be determined after the UN convoys express their readiness and the United States provide security guarantees of their safe passage.

"The Russian Defense Ministry is ready to support the proposal of the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary General for Syria Mr. [Staffan] de Mistura concerning the establishment of a 48-hour humanitarian pause to supply the population of the city with food and medical items and to restore life-support systems that were destroyed as a result of militia shelling,” Konashenkov said.

De Mistura called for the establishment of the pause in fighting earlier in the day to allow UN convoys to enter Aleppo, saying that not a single convoy has been able to reach the besieged areas so far in August.

“We are ready to implement next week the first 48-hour humanitarian pause to supply Aleppo civilians with humanitarian aid as a ‘pilot project’ and to confirm the safe delivery of the goods to the population of the city,” Konashenkov told reporters.

Russia is ready to assist in the safe passage of the United Nations’ humanitarian convoys into Syria with the coordination of the Arab republic’s government.

The Russian Defense Ministry is ready to exert additional efforts to enhance the efficiency of mechanisms used in examining and ensuring the security of UN convoys heading to East Aleppo, the spokesman added.

“This will help to lower the concerns of the Syrian government about the content of delivered goods and remove the necessity of a detailed examination of the convoys by the government forces. The representatives of the Russian Center for Reconciliation will exercise any help to the Syrian troops during the passage of the convoy’s through the checkpoints before entering Aleppo,” Konashenkov stressed.

The Russian Defense Ministry said Thursday it was expecting the delivery of UN humanitarian aid to Syria's Aleppo via two routes that would ensure food and medical supplies to areas controlled by opposition militia and government forces.
