The American Red Cross needs donations to help flood victims in the US state of Louisiana, in part because national news reports are focused on other events, the state’s Governor John Bel Edwards said at a televised news conference.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The Louisiana governor was joined by US Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson, US Congressman Cedric Richmond and American Red Cross President Gail McGovern in explaining rescue and recovery efforts in the city of Baton Rouge.

"I would ask those people watching in Louisiana and around the country to seriously consider making a generous donation to the American Red Cross today so that we can speed assistance," Edwards said on Thursday.

With news focused on the US presidential election and the Olympics, flooding that has damaged or destroyed 40,000 homes in Louisiana has received scant coverage in national media compared with other natural disasters.

"The only downside to not being prominently displayed in the news across the country as it relates to this event is that perhaps the national attention isn’t on it as it relates to donations to the Red Cross," Edwards explained.
