WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump is leading his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton in the solidly Republican state of Texas by six points primarily because of strong support from elderly voters, a Public Policing Polling (PPP) poll revealed on Tuesday.
"Trump's lead is based entirely on his holding a 63-33 advantage among seniors," the poll summary stated. "With voters under 65, Clinton leads him 49-45."
Overall, Trump leads Clinton 44-38 percent in Texas, according to the poll.
In the 2012 presidential election, then Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney beat current President Barack Obama by 16 points in Texas.
The last Democrat to win the state of Texas in a presidential election was Jimmy Carter in 1976.
The margin of error in this poll was 3.2 percent.
