Radical Islamist preacher Anjem Choudary and his co-defendant Mohammed Rahman are facing imprisonment after being found guilty of pledging allegiance to Daesh, the UK Metropolitan police said Tuesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On August 5, Choudary and Rahman were charged with encouraging support for Daesh, outlawed in Russia and numerous countries, via social networks between June 2014 and March 2015.

"Between 29 June 2014 and 6 March 2015 invited support for a proscribed terrorist organization, namely ISIL, also known as ISIS or the Islamic State [Daesh], contrary to section 12 Terrorism Act 2000. Choudary and Rahman are believed to have been recruiters and radicalisers for over 20 years and have been closely associated with another proscribed organisation Al Muhajiroun [ALM]. ALM is believed to be the driving force behind a number of people who later committed terrorist attacks including the 7/7 bombers and Lee Rigby's murderers," the police said in a statement.

Choudary and Rahman reportedly face up to 10 years in prison, they are to be sentenced in September.

Both men were arrested in September 2014 on suspicion of being members of Daesh, but remained free on bail throughout the investigation.
