RIO DE JANEIRO (Sputnik) – Russia won gold in men’s team foil fencing at the Rio Olympics, thus the total number of Russian gold medals at the Games now stands at five.

Russia’s Timur Safin, Artur Akhmatkhuzin and Aleksey Cheremisinov beat France’s team with a score of 45:41 on Friday.

The United States took bronze, winning against Italy’s team with a score of 45:31.

The Russian men’s fencing team won an Olympic gold for the first time since 1996.

Russia now has five gold medals at the Rio Olympics, as well as nine silvers and eight bronzes.

The 2016 Summer Olympic Games are being held in Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro from August 5 until August 21. Brazil is the first South American country to host the competition.
