Some Western media are distorting facts about the situation in Aleppo and ignoring Moscow's role in conducting a humanitarian operation in the Syrian city, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Moscow notes frequent attempts to distort the information on the situation in the Syrian city of Aleppo, some western media outlets are engaged in outright speculation, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Thursday.

"In recent times the cases of incidents of attempts to distort the information on developments in Syria’s Aleppo have become more frequent. Some western media outlets, which seek to be objective and impartial, are engaging in outright speculation, operating with unverified information from dubious sources," the ministry said in a statement.

According to the ministry, accusations of violence by the Syrian army or the Russian Aerospace Forces are abundant, while information on Russian humanitarian work in the country is ignored.

Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011, with government forces loyal to President Bashar Assad fighting numerous opposition factions and extremist groups. A US-Russia-brokered ceasefire came into force across Syria on February 27. It does not apply to terrorist groups such as Daesh and Jabhat Fatah al Sham (al-Nusra Front), both outlawed in many countries, including Russia.

Aleppo is partially controlled by al-Nusra Front. Moscow and Damascus have launched a large-scale humanitarian operation and opened escape routes for civilians and militants wishing to lay down arms.
