RIO DE JANEIRO (Sputnik) — Tuesday saw 15 sets of medals being awarded in disciplines of whitewater canoe slalom, diving, equestrian sport, fencing, gymnastics, judo, shooting, swimming and weightlifting.
The US Olympic team is leading in the overall ranking with 26 medals, including nine gold, eight silver and nine bronze medals. Russia is in the fifth place with three gold medals, six silver medals and three bronze medals.
Russian judoka Khasan Khalmurzaev on Tuesday won a gold medal in the men's 81 kg finals. Khalmurzaev defeated US judoka Travis Stevens with the highest "ippon" score.
"It was a successful day: we have achieved everything that was planned and in what we trusted. I am happy <…> I realized that I had no right to lose to the US [athlete] in the finals," Khalmurzaev told reporters.
Russian gymnastics women's team wins silver
Russia's women’s gymnastics team won silver at the 2016 Rio Olympics, losing out to the US team.
Angelina Melnikova, Aliya Mustafina, Maria Paseka, Daria Spiridonova and Seda Tutkhalyan got 176.688 points, roughly 8.1 points less than the US team.
Earlier, Russia's men’s gymnastics team won silver at the Rio Olympics.
US swimmer Phelps becomes 21-time Olympic champion
Phelps' 21th medal came as part of the US swim team, which also includes Conor Dwyer, Townley Haas and Ryan Lochte, after they won the men's 4x200m freestyle relay. The UK team won silver while the Japanese team took home bronze.
World number 1 tennis player Serena Williams leaves Rio
Top-seeded US tennis player Serena Williams lost to Ukraine's Elina Svitolina, who ranks 20th in the world, in the women's singles tennis competition.
Svitolina knocked Williams out in the third round of the singles tournament, spoiling the multiple Grand Slam winner's hopes of victory at the Rio Olympics.
