MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Special Monitoring Mission (SMM) of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), deployed in Ukraine, noted on Friday a significant decrease in violence in the Luhansk Region in eastern Ukraine.

Last week, 209 ceasefire violations were registered in the Luhansk region, compared to over 2,000 the previous week, OSCE SMM Deputy Chief Monitor Alexander Hug told reporters. He noted, however, that in the Donetsk region the number of ceasefire violations had not changed significantly compared to the previous week.

Hug noted that the mission had registered destruction all across the contact line in eastern Ukraine, as the conflicting sides have failed to withdraw all the weapons.

Ukraine's southeast has been engulfed in a conflict since April, 2014, when Kiev launched a military operation to suppress local militia. The OSCE mission was deployed in eastern Ukraine to monitor the region, as both Kiev and the local militias have accused each other of violating the Minsk ceasefire deal, signed in February 2015.
