Half of Asylum Seekers in Czech Republic in 2016 Come From Ukraine, Iraq

As many as 765 migrants have applied for asylum in the Czech Republic since the beginning of 2016, with Ukrainians and Iraqis making almost a half of them, the Czech Interior Ministry said on Friday.

PRAGUE (Sputnik) — According to the statement, 64 Chinese nationals, 40 Cubans and some 30 Syrians were among those who applied for asylum in the Czech Republic since the beginning of the year.

"Ukrainians have been constituting the majority of asylum applicants in Czech Republic for a long time. This year, [Ukrainians] submitted 246 applications, which is 134 applications less than a year ago. Iraqi citizens submitted 131 applications," the statement read as quoted by Parlamentni Listy newspaper.

As much as 131 refugees received asylum in the country in the first half of 2016.
