Japan’s Yamaguchi prefecture on Wednesday gave the green light to the construction of a new nuclear power plant on the western coast, local media reported.

TOKYO (Sputnik) — Chugoku Electric Power Co’s plans to build the Kaminoseki Nuclear Power Station were suspended after residents’ protests in 2008 and again after the 2011 Fukushima meltdown. The license expired soon after.

Over 70% of Japanese Against Nuclear Power Plants After Fukushima Tragedy
Despite renewed protests, the permit for the nuclear company to proceed with landfill work in the coastal town of Kaminoseki has now been renewed, the Kyodo news agency said. It will be valid until 2019. The firm is also required to draw a construction timeline.

Japan suspended most of its nuclear reactors to conduct safety checks after a devastating earthquake and a tsunami hit the Fukushima nuclear power, triggering the leakage of radioactive materials. The accident is considered to be the world's worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl.
