WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The Jeep was among the 1.1 million vehicles subject to an April 2015 safety recall due to problems with the gearshift.
“In spite of our unbelievable grief, we decided to come here to prevent other family from the same tragedy,” Victor Yelchin said in a press conference in Los Angeles alongside his wife Irina and family lawyer, Gary Dordick.
Anton Yelchin, the 27-year-old actor who portrayed Pavel Chekov in the summer blockbuster Star Trek: Beyond, was killed in a roll-away incident in June, when his 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee shifted out of park and pinned him against a mailbox pillar at his home in Los Angeles.
Yelchin’s family moved from Leningrad, now called Saint Petersburg, Russia in 1989 as refugees and moved to Los Angeles, California when Anton was six months old.
