BERLIN (Sputnik) — This comes after Turkish Foreign Minister Mevluet Cavusoglu threatened Ankara would scrap the migrant deal with Brussels if Turkish nationals do not get visa-free access to the European Union’s borderless Schengen area by mid-October.
"To secure visa liberalization with the EU, Turkey needs to meet all requirements," Martin Schaefer told reporters in Berlin, adding that he did not expect that Turkey would carry out its threat.
The EU-Turkey deal was agreed on March 18. Turkey pledged to take back all undocumented migrants who come ashore in Greece if EU countries have Syrian refugees resettled from Turkish camps on a one-for-one basis. The bloc also promised to accelerate the Turkish EU accession and introduce visa-free regime.
