Unlike modern Olympics, the Ancient Olympic Games offered fewer disciplines to compete in. The first competition held in Greece in 776 BC lasted one day that saw athletes take part in a single event, short-distance running. Other sports that were added later included long-distance running, boxing, pentathlon, pankration and equestrian events.
