Hundreds of supporters of US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders rallied in Philadelphia’s Franklin Delano Roosevelt Park in support of the senator and against his opponent, presumptive Democratic Party nominee Hillary Clinton, ahead of the party’s nominating convention this week.

PHILADELPHIA (Sputnik) — On July 12, Sanders endorsed his rival for the presidency, but hundreds of his supporters were unconvinced on Sunday evening. Demonstrators held signs in favor of Sanders and calling for Clinton to withdraw from the race.

Graeme Cabrera joined other supporters to march more than 100 miles from Baltimore to Philadelphia in support of Sanders and against the Clinton campaign.

"I am marching to bring awareness to the election fraud that’s taken place in our country this year and to make a statement that we the people are not okay with it," Cabrera told Sputnik on Sunday. "We are not okay with the Democratic establishment continuing to disenfranchise us and then ask for our votes."

John Flaherty, a Sanders backer from the US state of Massachusetts who has been active in the campaign, explained that Clinton has been disliked by Republicans since the 1990s, but recent revelations have damaged the Democratic Party.

"I still think there’s a possibility he could get the nomination — here, now — because of what’s going on [with the Clinton campaign]," Flaherty stated.

Democratic National Committee Chief to Step Down After Publication

On Friday, the whistleblowing website Wikileaks published almost 20,000 pages of hacked Democratic National Committee emails that appear to demonstrate a concerted effort by top committee members to undermine Sanders’ campaign in favor of Clinton.

Sanders’ supporters believe that he can defeat Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump in the November general election. Cabrera noted that, according to recent polls, Clinton is losing to Republican nominee Donald Trump in two swing states and tied in a third.

Additionally, Flaherty explained that Clinton’s unfavorability ratings in sample polls have reached record highs, according to released polls.

With 2,807 delegates of the 2,383 needed to secure the party nomination, Clinton is expected to be nominated at the convention.

Cabrera said protesters intend to demonstrate outside of the convention events in the hope of encouraging delegates to cast their ballots for Sanders.

The Democratic National Convention begins in Philadelphia on July 25 and will conclude on July 28 following the party nomination.
