At least 19 people have been killed with dozens more injured by a man wielding a knife in Tokyo, officials have confirmed. The attack took place in a building in Sagamihara city, west of Tokyo.

It has been reported that the building serves as a home for the disabled. Staff contacted the police around 2:30 Tuesday morning local time, reporting that a man dressed in black clothes and armed with a knife had been seen at Tsukui Yamayuri Garden near the home. The attacker was later identified as 26-year-old Satoshi Uematsu, who allegedly turned himself into police.  He is believed to have previously worked at the facility. Reports say the suspect went to a police station and confessed to committing the murders.

According to the Asahi newspaper, the suspect told police he wanted to "rid the world of disabled people."

At this time authorities have not announced a motive for the attack. It has been reported that four of injured victims are in critical condition.
