Hamas Movement Agrees to Hold Palestinian Municipal Elections in October

The Palestinian movement Hamas supports holding elections via a single system, that means voting on a single day following a single decree both in the Gaza Strip and in the West Bank, according to the movement's spokesman.

GAZA (Sputnik) — The Palestinian movement Hamas gave its consent to hold municipal elections in October both in the Gaza Strip and in the West Bank, the movement's spokesman, Sami Abu Zuhri, said Thursday.

"We support holding elections via a single system, that means voting on a single day following a single decree both in the Gaza Strip and in the West Bank," Zuhri said in a statement

Palestine’s Hamas Denies Role in Assassination of Egyptian Prosecutor
Presidential and parliamentary elections were postponed several times because of political disputes between Hamas, which has de-facto control over the Gaza Strip, and the more moderate West Bank-based Fatah party.

In June 2014, Hamas and Fatah formed a unity government to pave the way toward elections in the Palestinian territories.
