MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The unemployment rate in the United Kingdom for the March-May period fell to 4.9 percent, its lowest since 2005, the UK Office for National Statistics said Wednesday.
"The unemployment rate for those aged 16 and over for March to May 2016 was 4.9%. This was: lower than for the 3 months to February 2016 (5.1%); lower than for a year earlier (5.6%). The unemployment rate has not been lower since July to September 2005," bulletin reads.
According to the bulletin, there were 1.65 million unemployed people in the United Kingdom in March to May 2016, which is the last period to be reported before the UK voted to leave the European Union.
UK voters backed leaving the economic union in a June 23 referendum.
On Monday, the Ernst & Young audit firm's ITEM Club forecasting group said that turmoil following Brexit would lead to rising inflation and unemployment.
