WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — "Only we can prove that we have the grace and the character and the common humanity to end this kind of senseless violence, to reduce fear and mistrust within the American family," Obama said in a statement.

Earlier on Sunday, at least three police officers were killed and several others injured, including one in critical condition, in a shooting in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, which reportedly involved three attackers.

The location of the shooting is some five miles away from where police shot and killed African-American man Alton Sterling last week, triggering protests across the country.
