Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel is from the town of Msaken, the Tunisian ministry said.
"The terrorist has been identified, his full name is Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel, he was born in Tunisia in 1985 in… Msaken in Sousse province. This information was received after the interaction with the airport authorities and the Interior Ministry," a source in the Tunisian Ministry of Internal Affairs told Sputnik.
The source added that the Nice truck driver visited Tunisia four years ago.
Earlier in the day, Nice-Matin.com reported that Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel was a potential perpetrator of the deadly attack in Nice.
French police found Bouhlel's identity card in the cargo compartment of the truck which rammed into a crowd celebrating the Bastille Day in Nice, killing 84 and injuring dozens.
Earlier in the day, police raided the house of the driver. The potential radicalization of the man had gone unnoticed by police.
The white truck that was used to carry out the deadly Nice attack was rented a few days before the Thursday night attack, according to earlier reports.
The Paris prosecutor's office officially opened a terrorism investigation into the Bastille Day attack in Nice.
