In June, Cleveland city officials settled a lawsuit filed by the ACLU alleging that original regulations and space restrictions on demonstrators outside the convention hall violated freedom of assembly. The revised rules ensure that people have enough space to express themselves, the ACLU said in a statement.
"We [ACLU] are not anticipating that the city is going to play ‘fast and loose’ with the settlement for the lawsuit," ACLU Chief Lobbyist Gary Daniels told Sputnik on Wednesday.
The ACLU legal team, Daniels noted, anticipates that Cleveland police and officials will uphold the regulations on space restrictions agreed to per the lawsuit settlement, although it is impossible to predict.
The Republican National Convention will take place in Cleveland, Ohio on July 18-21.
