Philip Hammond has said the UK will come out the single market as part of its decision to leave the EU, but will negotiate access to the bloc.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The United Kingdom is set to leave the EU single market as a result of the June Brexit referendum, but will then negotiate access to this free trade zone, UK finance minister Philip Hammond said Thursday.

"We will come out of the single market as a result of the decision to leave the EU. The question is how we negotiate with the EU – not from the point of view of being members of it, but from the point of view of being close neighbors and trade partners of it – how we will work together in future," the chancellor told UK’s LBC radio.

"I would like to see us negotiating access to the single market for Britain’s business so that we can go on selling our goods and services into the EU market and, indeed, enjoying the benefits of consuming EU goods and services here as we do now," he explained.

European Council President Donald Tusk warned last month that the United Kingdom would not gain "a la carte" access to the single European market without agreeing to EU’s freedom of movement principle, something London had objected to for a long time.
